Snap photos of an impressive war memorial surrounded by rows of palm trees, pretty floral displays and charming pastel buildings.

The Cenotaph is an inspiring statue that pays tribute to the military personnel of the Bahamas who lost their lives in World Wars I and II and a naval attack by Cuban fighters. It is in the heart of the pretty Garden of Remembrance, which is flanked by palm trees and floral displays. Consider the meaning behind the statue as you relax in these serene and picturesque gardens.

The statue consists of square platform topped by a white obelisk with a cross. Climb the small steps to the base of the monument and inspect the plaque dedicated to those who lost their lives serving the British Empire, the Commonwealth and the Bahamas in World Wars I and II. The statue also commemorates the four Royal Bahamas Defence Force Marines killed aboard the HMBS Flamingo, when it was sunk by a Cuban rocket.

Contemplate the sacrifices made by these individuals. Many visitors do not realize the Bahamas participated in these wars. Enjoy the serenity of the gardens, as you consider those who gave up their lives in the pursuit of freedom. Capture photos of the monument, with pink buildings behind it.

Meet friends at this popular gathering point before exploring the surroundings. Visit the parliamentary and judicial buildings and spend time in the public library beside this historic plaza. The unique octagonal-shaped multi-story library building is topped by a balcony and dome and once served as a jail. Step inside to visit its museum. See the monument in the Garden of Remembrance for free. The gardens are open to the public at all times.

The Cenotaph is just a few blocks from the coast in the Downtown Nassau area in the center of the city. Walk south from the Nassau Bahamas Cruise Terminal for about 5 minutes to get here. Visit nearby sights, such as Prince George Wharf, the pink Government House and the Queen’s Staircase.
