Its grandiose colonnade and refurbished 19th-century interior make up an exquisite setting, with excellent acoustics for operatic shows and music concerts.

With its majestic design and upscale shows, the Royal Theater (Teatro Real) of Madrid lives up to its billing as one of the preeminent opera houses in Europe. Its stage is regularly the showcase for the exquisite ballets and operatic performances of the Compañía del Teatro Real, as well as classical recitals from other sets of acclaimed musicians. Attend a performance in the resplendent auditorium to appreciate some of Madrid’s top talents.

For a comprehensive understanding of the history of the Royal Theater, participate in one of the daily docent-led tours. The tour takes you backstage to the rehearsal rooms and workshop areas as well as the auditorium and stage. Browse the relics and vestiges on display in the museum section to learn about important past performances in this theater, which was inaugurated in 1818.

Enter the atrium and purchase a ticket for a show. Choose from piano recitals, flamenco dance shows and operatic performances. Bring your kids to the puppet shows, while teens may appreciate the musical workshops and operas for adolescents. Purchase audio recordings and musical souvenirs in the gift shop, which also sells jewelry, clothing and children’s games, among other items. The gift shop opens daily from morning until evening.

Relax with a meal at one of the restaurants or cafés adorning the spacious Plaza de Isabel II. From one of the tables spilling out onto this gorgeous square, you’ll be able to enjoy a vista of the opera’s impressive colonnade and pillared façade graced with golden features.

Find the Royal Theater in the northwestern corner of the city center of Madrid. Take the metro to the adjacent Ópera station or get a bus to the stop on the side of the complex. While here, visit some of the other sights in the vicinity, including the Museo de Medicina Infanta Margarita, the Casa José Cubiles and the Cabo Noval Gardens.
