Admire exquisite artwork, relax in flower-filled gardens and enjoy fine views of Jodhpur’s pretty cityscape at this architecturally impressive mausoleum.

Discover a fascinating display of art, architecture and history at the remarkable Jaswant Thada mausoleum. Relax amid manicured gardens, gaze across a placid lake and delight in the unsurpassed views over Jodhpur’s rooftops. Maharaja Sardar Singh built Jaswant Thada in 1899 as a memorial to his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. Today, it stands as a splendid example of Rajputana-style architecture and is often called the Taj Mahal of Marwar.

A spellbinding sense of calm settles in as you approach this breathtaking monument. Notice the checkerboard floor that surrounds the lower courtyard and climb the grand staircase to the mausoleum’s entrance. The main memorial resembles a temple, with a white marble façade that sparkles in the sunlight. Take time to look at the elegant arcades, domes, porches and spires, most adorned with intricately carved latticework.

Inside the monument you’ll discover a veritable collection of art. Spot artistically designed tombs, graceful arches and stylish sculptures. See portraits of the former leaders of Jodhpur and revered maharajas. Don’t miss the curious commemoration of a peacock that perished after flying into a funeral pyre.

The picturesque and breezy gardens of the mausoleum provide a welcome break from Jodhpur’s city bustle. Stroll between colorful flowerbeds and gazebos. Listen to street performers play melancholic songs on a sarangi, a wooden stringed instrument. Stand on the terraces and watch flocks of birds cool off in the tranquil lake. Have your camera ready to snap postcard-perfect shots of nearby Mehrangarh Fort and Jodhpur’s blue-painted rooftops.

The mausoleum is just under a 10-minute drive from Ghanta Ghar in Jodhpur’s city center. Get here via affordable auto-rickshaws and taxis. Alternatively, it’s about a 20-minute walk from Ghanta Ghar. The walk will take you via rocky hills, which adds an extra touch of mysticism to the attraction.

Jaswant Thada is open daily and has an admission fee. Pay an additional fee if you wish to enter with a camera. Remove your shoes before entering the main memorial and leave them at the bottom of the staircase.
