The Naval College is a military institution housed in a majestic building of colonial design. The structure contains displays showcasing intriguing historic artifacts. Capture photos of this grandiose building, with its cream façade, many arched windows and central clock tower.
Gaze up at the statue in the central courtyard and stroll through these serene grounds. Notice the young military cadets patrolling the premises and performing their daily duties. They are generally preparing to enroll in the Navy Academy, where they will aspire to become military personnel in Brazil’s naval forces.
Chat with the officers and ask to take photos with them. Attend military events and practices, including the raising and lowering of the national flag.
Bring your kids to learn about the intricacies and context behind the school and the nation’s naval fleets. Turn to face the Atlantic Coast and enjoy the spectacular views of the water. Walk out along the pier opposite the school and spot a variety of boats on the water and verdant islands beyond.
Look for turtles and other marine creatures on the shore. Stay here until dusk to see the brooding colors of the sunset beginning to take hold.
Note that the internal part of the establishment, which contains several exhibitions, is often closed to the public. Occasionally, visitors are allowed to enter.
The Naval College is to the southwest of Angra dos Reis, which is located between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, on Brazil’s eastern coast. Walk southwest for roughly 1 mile (2 kilometers) to arrive here from the center of Angra dos Reis in about 30 minutes. You can also ride a bus to a stop beside the building.
