Study the whitewashed colonial architecture of this municipal building and then hang out beneath the shade of a tree in its adjoining square.

Angra dos Reis City Hall (Prefeitura Municipal de Angra dos Reis) is the administrative seat of Angra dos Reis and one of the city’s prime examples of a colonial landmark. It houses the offices of the city’s municipal government and is responsible for the organization of cultural activities. In Angra dos Reis you’ll get a glimpse into the past of Brazil’s Portuguese rule.

The building has a modest Portuguese colonial design. Three arched doorways stand in the center of the façade and surrounding them are square-shaped windows. A double-sided staircase, which is fronted by an ornamental balustrade, leads to the doorways. Between the doors and the upper windows are the words Governo Municipal (Municipal Government). The flags of Brazil and Angra dos Reis hang above the words.

The city hall arranges and supports numerous events throughout the year. Among these are athletics, soccer and swimming competitions, communal weddings, food markets and live music performances. The events take place at various locations around the city.

In front of the landmark is a tree-shaded plaza called Nilo Peçanha Square. Sit on a bench and watch as government workers come and go from the building. An obelisk-like monument stands in the heart of the square, on which a plaque commemorates the fourth centenary of the discovery of the city. On the south side of the square is another colonial-style building, which once operated as a prison.

Angra dos Reis City Hall is less than a 5-minute walk from the city’s waterfront. Some parking is available, although the streets are often chaotic and time-consuming to navigate. Combine your time here with a visit to other major attractions. See fishermen arrive with their catch at Angra dos Reis Port and then shop for fresh products at the Fish Market. Browse an exhibition of sacred art at the Church of Our Lady da Lapa e Boa Morte.
