Dating back to the 16th century, this church is one of the Algarve’s most exquisite pieces of Renaissance architecture that includes remarkable stonemasonry.

Gaze in awe at the beautifully carved front portal of the Misericórdia Church. Also known as the Mercy of Tavira, this 16th-century church is regarded as one of the region’s architectural treasures. Inside the church, you’ll find three naves adorned with blue-and-white tiles and Baroque imagery.

Spend some time admiring the church’s monumental Renaissance façade. The main portal has a rounded archway with ornate carved pilasters. Look closer to see the detailed Renaissance frieze bordering the arch. See carved depictions of leaves, seahorses, mermaids, swans and eagles. Above the doorway is a statue of Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia (Our Lady of Mercy) flanked by angels and reliefs depicting St. Peter and St. Paul. Spot the coat of arms for the city and the crown, which are carved into the mottled stone.

Enter the church to experience its light-filled atmosphere. The church’s white-painted interior walls are adorned with blue tile panels. The tiled imagery depicts the Obras de Misericórdia (Works of Mercy), as well as scenes from the bible.

Wander past the rows of columns and explore the three naves and four bays. A blue-and-gold stairway leads to the sumptuous high altar. Admire the 18th-century altarpiece, which features an elaborate gilded design of angels, intricate archivolts and the national shield. The church’s throne is designed to look like the prow of a ship and is decorated with Baroque embellishments. Check out the restored organ cabinet, which is dated 1785.

Misericórdia Church is located in the parish of Santa Maria in Tavira’s historic heart. The building is open to visitors throughout the day, except for a brief closure at lunchtime. Attend one of the regular services or visit outside of scheduled events to enjoy exploring the church at your own pace. While in the area, be sure to visit the Castelo de Tavira, the Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo and the Torre de Tavira. The church is located adjacent to the city’s Tourist Information Centre.
