Experience weightlessness, sit inside a shuttle’s capsule and watch movies on a domed screen at this interactive celebration of space.

Delve into the fascinating world of cosmology, the solar system and space travel at the Hong Kong Space Museum. This family-friendly museum has hundreds of hands-on exhibits set inside a unique egg-shaped domed building. Act out different stages of spaceflight, watch 3-D and OMNIMAX movies and take part in astronomy activities.

Start at the Hall of the Cosmosexhibition, which introduces the history of our universe, the Solar System, planets, moons and far-flung galaxies via educational exhibits. One activity allows you to pass between celestial objects while standing on a surfboard-like platform. Have fun adjusting solar winds to create an aurora on a model of Earth, and make comets out of dry ice. Watch a multimedia presentation that explains how the universe evolved after the Big Bang.

On the second floor, the Hall of Space Exploration exhibition looks into the changes in space exploration and technology. Experience weightlessness inside a virtual space station and sit next to a mock astronaut in the capsule of a Shenzhou spacecraft. Study a timeline of astronauts and their space missions and see replicas of notable rockets. Reenact a rocket launch at China’s Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center and understand the principles of rocket propulsion.

Check the schedule at the museum’s Stanley Ho Space Theatre for space and nature-themed movies. OMNIMAX projections on a huge dome screen evoke the sensation of being transported to places such as the Solar System and beneath the world’s oceans. Cantonese speakers can take advantage of astronomy lectures and workshops, among other activities.

Located in the Yau Tsim Mong area of Kowloon, the museum is a 5-minute walk from East Tsim Sha Tsui subway station. The Hong Kong Cultural Centre and Hong Kong Museum of Art are some nearby attractions.

The Hong Kong Space Museum is open from Wednesday to Monday and there’s an admission fee. A separate fee is applicable for the space theater. Full details are available via the museum’s official website.
