Visit Carolinas Aviation Museum to learn the history of aviation in the United States and see many impressive aircraft. Sit in the cockpits of military, civil and commercial aircraft in this massive facility. The museum also displays a collection of helicopters, including a CH-46D Sea Knight with a remarkable history of service during the Vietnam War.
Notice the Airbus A320-214, a modern airliner and one of the museum’s main attractions. The exhibit Miracle on the Hudson marks a significant moment in United States aviation history. In 2009, the aircraft hit a flock of migrating geese and both engines shut down. As a result, the aircraft had to attempt a “water landing” on the Hudson River. Fortunately all passengers and crewmembers survived. See the actual aircraft and learn more about this incredible event in the main exhibit.
Study many impressive military aircraft displayed in the museum. The D-558-1 Skystreak is an extremely rare research aircraft, one of two in the world. Another highlight in the museum’s military collection is the AV-8 Harrier II, commonly known as the Harrier Jump Jet. The AV-8 Harrier II was designed to take off vertically and hover in mid-air.
Carolinas Aviation Museum also displays a replica of the Wright Flyer, the first powered aircraft to achieve sustained flight. Other civil aircraft on display include a Savoia Marchetti S.56B, an Italian-designed single-engine biplane and flying boat. Look for the Cessna 150, one of the most popular aircraft in the world. The museum’s Cessna exhibit is integral in teaching visitors how an airplane is operated.
Book a group tour to learn how Carolinas Aviation Museum preserves aircraft history and encourages younger generations to continue evolving aviation technology. The museum hosts many different tours for children and adults. It is open daily year-round, excluding major holidays. The large facility is located next to Charlotte Douglas International Airport, about 6 miles (10 kilometers) from downtown Charlotte.
With a large collection of airline artifacts, displayed aircraft and educational programs, Carolinas Aviation Museum is perfect for families and aviation enthusiasts.
