"I had an amazing time at Ryokan Yufuin Tsubaki. I booked the half-board stay at Tsubaki using Expedia and the staff at Tsubaki was in contact with me almost immediately to confirm the details and finalize the pick up time from Yufuin Station. Note that as a fan of walking, even Tsubaki's location is a bit far from the Yufuin Station so once the staff picks you up at the train station to take you back to the ryokan (around 3pm), you will likely end up spending the rest of your time at the ryokan...

"The hotel offer superb Japanese hospitality, the meals are delicious. Service are polite and excellent ! It is a very traditional Ryokan with an in-room onsen bath. The hotel does not offer a communal onsen bath. Our room faces mount Yufuin and the view is very nice. Hotel does not have a shuttle service, however, it will pay the taxi driver when you hail a taxi to go to the hotel, on check out, hotel will get a taxi to get you back to the rail station . The stay was very relaxing and of value."

"Very close to major site seeing location including walkable distance to the stations. You can feel traditional vibe here for sure. It was very roomy, quiet and private. Our room had a private outdoor onsen and it was beautiful ~~ so relaxing with killer view of the mountain. Owner who welcomed us spoke excellent English and so friendly. "Nice property just off the main street, near train station. It is pet friendly with 3 resident cats roaming around the lobby. You get to book 2 sessions at the baths after checked in, the semi open bath on the 2nd level is popular, while the rooftop bath may not be a good idea in cold weather although the view is great. You get free use of the bicycles for your stay. There is no lift so you have to carry your luggages up and down the stairs."

"Stay away from this hotel: no person in the front desk; the heat was not working (-2 Celsius); no one answered the phone for customer service … worst nightmare for my stay in a foreign country that only a few persons speak English. I will try to dispute the charges for my stay. I was disappointed that Expedia didn’t step in to help!! Very frustrating and un-professional "
