The journey almost beats the destination at Togo Chasm, a magnificent oasis that lies at the end of a breathtaking trail through exposed coral fields. Wander through lush tropical vegetation before reaching the fascinating natural phenomenon of the Togo Chasm coral fields. Beyond here, you’ll find the tranquil refuge of Togo Chasm itself, which is perfect for some restful meditation or sunbathing in the soft sand.
The trail begins with a gentle descent toward the sea. Make the most of the shaded half-hour stroll beneath lush ferns and swaying tropical trees, and try to pick what is different about this particular forest. In the soil, the roots of the plants interlock with a base made of ancient coral that has been decaying over the years.
As you leave the forest, the trail opens up into a vast plain of exposed coral reef. This is one of a few places on earth where the phenomenon occurs on such a large scale. Tall and sharp coral towers spike upwards, the dull-gray tone of the skeletons contrasting starkly with the blue of the ocean beyond. Check out the many different shapes and sizes of the coral rock and imagine how this area would have looked when it was submerged by water and thriving with tropical fish.
Make your way along the path and wander through the strange environment until you find a small stepladder. This ladder will bring you to a secluded “beach” separate from the sea. After your walk, relax with your toes in the sand and enjoy a well-deserved rest. Find shade beneath the palms and take a moment to appreciate the tranquility before embarking on your return.
Togo Chasm is accessible via a pathway that starts to the north of Hakupu on Niue’s southeastern region. Wear sturdy enclosed shoes and be sure to bring a bottle of water for the walk. Togo Chasm and the trail are open to visit at any time.
