Teatro Cine General Manuel Márquez de León, or simply Teatro Márquez de León, in Todos Santos, Mexico, has a charming appearance with its characteristic adobe architecture. It is also a very busy location with shows occurring throughout the year, many for free. Stop by to find out what is being featured during your visit.
The theater, one of the first in the region, opened in 1944 after the governor for Baja California promised the area’s youth that he would build them a showcase for their art. General Francisco J. Mujica made the promise on a visit in 1942 when the young artists organized an exhibition for him. Two years later his promise was fulfilled.
The theater has 500 seats including a separate balcony section. It remains a cornerstone for the town’s cultural community by hosting events on a frequent basis. Attend events such as the annual Todos Santos film festival, dance expositions, concerts and art and photography exhibitions.
Around October 12 each year, the theater hosts numerous events for the celebration of the founding of Todos Santos. Even if you arrive when no events are scheduled, try to look inside the building to see its lovely interior with red seating, cream walls and dark wood trim. Its inviting appearance will make you want to come back for a show. Note that nearly all performances are in Spanish, providing an opportunity to learn more of the language or simply enjoy the visual aspects of the entertainment. The Teatro Márquez de León is open Monday to Friday.
