Climb up to the tower of this religious landmark to enjoy beautiful panoramic views across the entire town of Stralsund.

Located in Stralsund’s Old Town close to a lake surrounded by greenery, St. Mary’s Church is well worth a visit. Step inside to marvel at the Gothic architecture or walk around the exterior to appreciate a peaceful visit to this historic part of Germany.

St. Mary’s Church, known locally as St. Marienkirche, was built sometime before 1298. See how the sun reflects off the exterior clock and windows on a clear day or plan a visit in the evening to observe the beauty of the interior light, which makes the building seem to glow.

Like much of the historic architecture of northern Germany, the church was originally built in a brick Gothic style. Take note of the surrounding buildings in Old Town to see how St. Mary’s Church fits in aesthetically.

Over the years, various parts have been rebuilt after sustaining damage. For instance, the bell tower collapsed in the 1380s and the original steeple tower fell over in 1495. Look at the Baroque dome that replaced the steeple tower and dates back to 1708.

Climb several hundred steps leading up to the top of the tower. From here, look across the beautiful landscapes and buildings of Stralsund. Marvel at the bell and take pictures of the historic Old Town below.

Inside the church itself, see the beautiful artwork around the altar and appreciate the shimmering organ. The colors of the stained glass at the front of the building shine brightly on a sunny day and create delightful shapes on the white and gray walls. Sit in one of the beautifully detailed golden pews to enjoy a peaceful moment.

There is a fee to enter St. Mary’s Church as a tourist and climb the bell tower. Metered parking is available just a short walk away. The church is also within walking distance of Stralsund’s main train station.

For some of the best views of the church from the outside, sit by the nearby lake and see the contrast between the greenery and the red brick.
