Royal Palace of Ischia

Watch a true Italian opera, marvel at the stunning views and wander through the garden of this once royal residence.

If you time it right, you can tour the Royal Palace of Ischia or attend a concert in this historic complex with thermal spas and gardens.

Previously a mansion, the Royal Palace of Ischia was constructed by a doctor in 1735. Only at a later date did it became a royal residence. The palace was transformed into a thermal spa and guesthouse for the Italian military in 1865. Today, it remains primarily under military use with occasional concerts and tours available to the public.

Tours of the palace and its gardens are often held in conjunction with the Opera e Liricamusic festival events, so check the local events calendar first to see if it is open.

Walk through the large gateway topped by statues of lions and through the lush gardens that surround the Royal Palace. The grounds once extended to include the waters of the modern day port of Ischia Porto. Glance back at the views of the port and imagine how it must have looked before king Ferdinand II had the volcanic lake opened up to the sea in 1854 to create the port.

The façade retains many of its original features. Originally built by court physician Francesco Buonocore, the 18th-century building operated as spa for nobles with its three hot springs said to provide miraculous health benefits.

The guide will show you the part of the interior that is publicly accessible and tell you how it came under the control of the ruling Bourbon family in 1799. Step out onto a terrace to see which parts of the impressive garden layouts from that royal period remain. Enjoy the magnificent bay views. Back inside, spot the military influences that now show through.

Stay for an evening concert and enjoy some authentic Italian entertainment made even more special by the atmospheric surroundings. Rich culture and history combine with the beautiful music to draw you in to the passionate performance.

The Royal Palace is centrally located in Ischia Porto and is best reached on foot, taxi or by public transportation. Note that opening times and public performances are limited. There is a charge for the guided tours and concerts.
