In Brazil’s far north the Amazon River flows though national parks, towns and cities and is the setting for memorable outdoor adventures and wildlife spotting.

Get ready for once-in-a-lifetime adventures amid the stunning natural landscapes of Brazil’s North Region. Canoe on the world’s second-longest river, trek in thick jungle, spot exotic wildlife and stay overnight at jungle lodges. Explore pristine national parks and visit sweltering cities. Swathed in tropical rainforest, the North Region extends from the Atlantic Ocean to Brazil’s Colombian and Peruvian borders.

The region’s biggest draw is the Amazon, an enormous jungle and river system that traverses around one half of the country. Join boat and canoe excursions along sections of the river and visit thriving indigenous communities. Spot wildlife such as multicolored birds and river dolphins. Manaus is a bustling urban center located on a bend of the Amazon River and a starting point for river and rainforest tours.

Scattered around the state of Amazonas are a series of unblemished national parks. Ride a boat between the islands of Parque Nacional do Jaú. Climb to the summit of the tallest mountain in Brazil, Pico da Neblina, in Parque Nacional do Pico da Neblina.

Stretching from the region’s center to the Atlantic Ocean is the state of Pará. Wander the streets of Belém, a port city and state capital. Admire the Portuguese-built landmarks and beaux-arts houses. Shop for Amazonian produce at the waterfront Ver-O-Peso market, in the city’s historic Cidade Velha. Catch a boat to the pretty beaches on the island of Marajó.

Travel to Amapá, the region’s northeastern state to explore more wilderness areas. Boating trips are possible around the myriad ecosystems of Parque Nacional do Cabo Orange. If you want to venture farther afield, join overland tours into neighboring French Guiana and Suriname. Inquire about departures from Belém.

Belém and Manaus are the transport hubs for the North Region. When visiting the Amazon it’s easy and convenient to get around via the many organized tours. Extend your Brazilian vacation and visit the beaches strewn along the northeastern coastline.
