Marvel at the magnificent decorations of this art nouveau masterpiece, dine in luxury and watch performances of opera and orchestral concerts.

Visit the Municipal House Hall (Obecní dům), one of Prague’s finest examples of art nouveau architecture. It’s an extravagant palace with museum-like restaurants, salons and the city’s largest concert hall. The Municipal House Hall opened in 1912 as a focal point for official and social gatherings. It stands on the site of Prague’s former King’s Court, which was established by King Wenceslas IV in the late 1300s.

This architectural gem is an important center for art and music, showcasing the outstanding talents of revered Czech artists, such as Alphonse Mucha and Max Švabinský. Admire the intricately designed entrance crowned by Karel Spillar’s half-domed mosaic, Homage to Prague. Flanking the mosaic are sculptures that symbolize the repression and rebirth of Czech nationals.

Step inside the building’s lobby to discover a wealth of art nouveau-style figurines and murals. The palace’s bar and restaurants double as museums of opulent décor. Spot colorful stained-glass windows, elegant chandeliers, upholstered furniture and paintings by Mucha. Enjoy exquisite Czech and French cuisine accompanied by live jazz and piano music.

Join a guided tour to visit the palace’s rooms and art exhibitions. Peek inside banquet halls, cloakrooms, games rooms and official meeting rooms. A major highlight is Mayor Hall, decorated floor-to-ceiling with murals and images of historical and mythological characters. See frescoes by Švabinský in the Riegr Room and canvases by Jan Preisler in Palacky Hall.

Continue on the tour with a visit to Smetana Hall, a regal 1,200-capacity concert venue. In 1918, it witnessed the declaration of an independent Czechoslovak Republic. Today, it hosts performances by chamber, classical and symphonic orchestras. These include recitals of work by great composers, such as Mozart and Vivaldi.

Guided tours in English take place daily. The bar, café and restaurants also open daily. Find admission fees, a concert schedule and ticket prices on the palace’s official website.

Located in Prague’s Old Town, Municipal House Hall is easily reached by foot, metro and tram from major city attractions such as Old Town Square. While here, climb to the top of the adjacent Powder Tower for impressive city views.
