Discover the remnants of a centuries-old Native American village then explore a nature trail and enjoy picnics along the Black Warrior River.

Visit the Moundville Archaeological Park to discover the remnants of a centuries-old Native American settlement, to learn about prehistoric lifestyles and to see displays of the arts and crafts of Mississippian cultures. Walk a woodland nature trail and relax with a picnic on the banks of the Black Warrior River.

The park spreads across 320 acres (130 hectares) and from A.D. 1000 to around A.D. 1450 it was home to one of the largest communities of Mississippian cultures in the USA. Today, 26 surviving earthen temple mounds serve as reminders of this ancient ceremonial and economic center. Climb the steps to the 60-foot (18-meter) tall Mound B, the tallest in the collection. It affords great views of the central plaza, houses and burrow pits. Note how the mounds are positioned according to their size.

Visit the Jones Archaeological Museum, where exhibits explain the significance of the park. Find life-size figures dressed in the ceremonial clothing and jewelry typical of the Mississippian cultures. Spot pottery, artwork and handicrafts found during archaeological excavations. Learn about Native American traditions via narratives and videos.

Take in the park’s scenic beauty by walking along the 0.5-mile (0.8-kilometer) boardwalk nature trail. It winds through thick Alabama woodland while presenting uninterrupted views of the temple mounds. Bring a picnic and relax on the park’s spacious lawns or find a spot on the banks of the nearby Black Warrior River.

Time your visit to coincide with October’s Moundville Native Americans Festival. Watch traditional dance performances and listen to live music, and see pottery, tool-making and archery displays. Browse the stands of a handicraft market for art, clothing, musical instruments and toys.

Situated in the town of Moundville, the Moundville Archaeological Park is about a 20-minute drive south from downtown Tuscaloosa. Free onsite parking is available. There is no public transport between Tuscaloosa and Moundville.

The park is open daily, until dusk. The museum is also open daily. Self-guided tour brochures of the park are available from the park’s entrance. Visit the park’s official website for information about guided tours, which should be booked in advance.

Wonderful site, lots of history, I have never seen a better museum about Native Americans. Most of the site can be seen from your car, but, go early, so it is not too hot so that you can climb to the top of the mounds
