"I want to start off by saying I had a nice visit, I did the half board option and the food was plentiful and very tasty. Lots of variety, the sushi was not good and their take on Western food isn't great but the Japanese food is awesome. 2 different Onsen areas that alternate gender daily so you can try both. The hotel is old, let's just prepare you for this, really old. It could do with a massive makeover but I doubt it will happen as they are very busy due to the amazing location. If you are...

"The walk to the hotel from the Kusatsu bus station is not a mere 8-10mins or so, esp with luggage in tow and that it’s a bit steep to get to this hotel. Definitely not for older folks!! Didnt like that we also couldnt prearrange for taxi service ahead of time on our way back to Tokyo as we did not want to catch the bus again. "We stayed at this lovely traditional hotel for three nights. Even though the staff doesn’t speak much English, they make it up with wonderful hospitality. I told the staff to let my husband in at midnight because he’s on the last train, the front desk clerk told me there’s no more taxi service and offered to pick him up. That was almost midnight. When we checked out they also gave me a small gift bag for my birthday ❤️ Every day we can choose different traditional outfits for the hot springs....

"This is a beautiful onsen with a friendly hard working staff. My only complaint is that there are no options for breakfast. We have stayed at several onsen in the past that offer traditional Japanese breakfast or western breakfast. I’m kind of picky about seafood, and I don’t like it for breakfast. My breakfast was mainly hoke, a whole (head to tail) grilled fish. "

"Incredible service and an absolutely amazing hotel. The staff were amazingly attentive and helpful, provided transport for us to see the monkey park and get us back to town in time for our train back. The evening meal was absolutely incredible and such a lovely experience, and the Onsen was outstanding. We loved our stay and would definitely stay again with absolutely no hesitation."

"We cannot say enough good things about this property. The staff were incredibly thoughtful, informative, and fun to chat with! We had never stayed in a ryokan before and would recommend KOKUYA to all our friends and family. "Overall enjoyed our stay but there were a few small things that could have made our stay more fulfilling. The entire place is made kids friendly which was really touching and is a welcome attitude given we are a family with 2 kids. The breakfast spread was quite good but had very limited vegetarian options - again the kids section there was really awesome! Rooms were quite clean but a bit smaller than anticipated, the toilet exhaust was a bit low or not working which made it a bit awkward. Loved the dedicated kids play area, gachapon area, vending machines, coin laundry, pool was paid, onsens were excellent and the halloween themed setup was cute. We were really relieved with the dedicated Lawson combini in their lobby!!! How cool is that :)"
