Surrounded on three sides by water, this lakeside town has a pretty boardwalk promenade and is the perfect place to launch your boating adventure.

Experience the pristine waterways of the Gippsland Lakes from Metung, a cozy waterfront town perched on a narrow peninsula jutting into Lake King. The town has been a fishing outpost since the 19th century and there’s no limit to its beautiful lakeside views as you look out from the town’s marinas and jetties. Embark on a sightseeing cruise around Australia’s largest inland network of waterways or relax with a coastal stroll along the long boardwalk that skirts the town.

Metung’s portside heritage can be seen in its historic architecture. Check out the Metung Hotel, which dates back to 1873. Wander around the town center and enjoy easy access to beautiful Bancroft Bay and the adjacent wharf. The Metung Boardwalk runs along the town’s eastern coastline from the center of town on the tip of the narrow peninsula and stretches north as the coastline wraps around the wide arc of Bancroft Bay. Local artists, jewelers and craftspeople display their work in Metung’s studios and galleries.

Save some time to grab a table at a waterfront café and indulge in a late breakfast or a laid-back lunch. Savor fresh ingredients sourced from the fertile plains of Gippsland’s countryside as you look out over Lake King. Alternatively, pick a pretty place opposite the Village Green to enjoy a picnic if the sun is shining. Select from Metung’s collection of restaurants that serve local seafood and regional wine, or enjoy a hearty meal at the Metung Pub. Outside, you’ll see pelicans feasting on a lunch of fish scraps left by local fishermen.

Take a dip at Metung Beach, rent a small boat or join a cruise to explore the beautiful waterways. Go waterskiing or feel the breeze in your hair as you sail a small rental yacht. Drop a fishing line from the various piers and you might catch bream, flathead, whiting and shrimp.

Metung is located on the lakeside of East Gippsland. It is less than a 4-hour drive east from Melbourne. Relax in one of the hotels near the wharf. With its boundless waters and year-round appeal, Metung is a picturesque place of simple pleasures.
