The Neighborhood:
Canary Wharf in East London is the beating financial heart of the city. The area is best known for the cluster of tall buildings that make up the modern banking centre of London, and though there is plenty more to see and do in Canary Wharf than just gazing at skyscrapers, 1 Canada Square, the second tallest building in the country, is an undeniably impressive sight. Visit the River Thames (which surrounds the Isle of Dogs on three sides), and enjoy the perfect afternoon strolling along whilst taking in the breathtaking views of the eclectic London architecture, with buildings both new and old. Alternatively, you can board a Thames Clipper boat from the docks and tour the capital by the river. For nature lovers, a quick 20-minute walk from the banking district is Mudchute Park and Farm with rare breeds of horses and ponies as well as a petting zoo. The Museum of London Docklands sits close to the banking highrises and charts the history of the dockland area and the people of East London throughout the centuries. Nearby Greenwich Park is a lovely green space with expansive views, and is home to the Royal Observatory, Maritime Museum, Meridian line (marking the Western and Eastern hemispheres), tennis courts, ponds, and a deer park!
There is plenty to do in this area with Canada Square Park hosting fantastic summer concerts and a winter ice-skating rink, while the Museum of London Docklands draws families with model ships and hands-on displays. Plenty of great pubs and bars including The Merchant, The Parlour Bar and Davy’s at Canary Wharf provide for great year-round watering holes. If you’re looking for a bite to eat, there are also some fantastic world-renowned restaurants to eat in including ROKA (Japanese), Gaucho (Steak) and One Canada Square (modern European cuisine) to name but a few. Perhaps the most interesting restaurant in the Canary Wharf area is Le Relais de Venise; an import imitating the original Parisian restaurant where there is only one dish on the menu (steak-fries), cooked to perfection. To the north of the banking buildings sits Billingsgate Fish Market, the largest inland fish market in the UK where you can browse and purchase from an incredible range of seafood.
