Lassen Peak, Bumpass Mountain and Ski Heil Peak are among the rocky behemoths that frame the deep blue water of this scenic lake.

Lake Helen is a large glacial basin at the foot of its namesake mountain. Its water is darker and deeper than the neighboring Emerald Lake, which is a short walk west. Admire the blue surface of the water in early winter, before it freezes but is framed by stunning snowy peaks.

Feel the cool breeze in your face beside the glacial bowl, which stands at an elevation of more than 8,000 feet (2,400 meters). Expect ice to form on the lake from October through July and be careful to avoid snow blizzards in winter. When the ice is gone, wade in the chilly water. You may be joined by occasional stand-up paddlers.

Stroll along the perimeter of the lake to enjoy the variety of views. In summer, lay down a blanket next to the water and have a picnic with your family. Appreciate the utter tranquility near this glacial bowl. Spot the reflection of Lassen Peak in the still water. Beside the lake runs the Bumpass Trail, whose narrow path meanders between the trees.

Head west to Emerald Lake and admire the greenish hues that suggest the water is shallower. Towering over this lake is the imposing Ski Heil Peak. Read the lakeside plaque for an insight into the natural history of the region.

Note that Lake Helen is named after adventurer Helen Tanner Brodt, who is thought to be the first woman to reach the top of Lassen Peak in 1864.

Find Lake Helen beside its smaller counterpart of Emerald Lake in the heart of Lassen Volcanic National Park. Drive north from Mill Creek for 18 miles (29 kilometers) to get here in about 30 minutes. Park your car at the Bumpass Trailhead, which provides a picturesque panorama of the mountains. Make sure to visit other natural landmarks in the vicinity, such as Brokeoff Mountain, Conard Meadows and Eagle Peak.

Note that winter access to the lake is by snowshoe or skiing, as this section of the highway closes during seasonal snowy weather.
