Try the diverse array of watersports on this scenic lake, wander through the forest and explore quaint villages and parks.

Lake Avandaro is a large water basin enclosed by the picturesque green hills of the Mexican countryside. It is an area full of waterfalls, dense woodland and varied topography. Rent a boat for a ride on the water and capture photos of the scenic landscape.

Select from a range of boats and Jet Skis to take out on the water. Sunbathe on the shore with friends and family and cool down with a swim in the lake. Consider water-skiing, sailing and fishing here.

These surroundings are popular for campers and mountain bikers. Go horseback riding on trails along the perimeter of the lake. Trek through the fir and pine forests that surround the lake and enjoy the serenity and closeness to nature. Lay down a blanket on the shore and have a picnic with views of the scenic water.

A little south of the lake is the peaceful and picturesque Velo de Novia park in the town of Avandaro. See the spectacular Velo de Novia waterfall from a wooden terrace in the park. Listen to the soothing sound of water rushing over the rocky river bed and snap photos of your family in the foreground. The waterfall plunges 115 feet (35 meters).

Explore the charming central plaza of Valle de Bravo on the lake’s eastern shore. It has quaint, cobbled streets, adobe buildings and artisanal markets.

Read about the famous Rock and Wheels music concert that took place here in 1971. It is known as Mexico’s version of Woodstock. Parking, lodgings and restrooms are provided by the ecological park around the lake.

Lake Avandaro is about a 50-mile (80-kilometer) drive west from the city center of Toluca, which should take less than 90 minutes. Several small towns surround the lake, including Avandaro, El Cerrillo and Valle de Bravo. Visit nearby sights, such as Bosencheve National Park and the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve.
