Visit Aalborg’s popular nightlife and entertainment street, which has one of the highest concentrations of bars, bistros and clubs in Denmark.

Jomfru Ane Gade (Virgin Anne’s Street) is an old Aalborg street that has become the hub for the city’s nightlife. This pedestrianized strip is only around 492 feet (150 meters) long, yet is home to one of Denmark’s largest densities of bars, restaurants and nightclubs. The local youth calls it “Gaden” (The Street).

The origins of the street date back to the late 1500s and Jomfru Ane Gade was originally home to local merchants. It is believed that it was named after a nun, Ane Viffert, who lived in Skavegade, a nearby street.

Enter some of the half-timbered houses that line the picturesque street. These former shops and dwellings are now popular places to eat and drink. Choose from sports bars, bistros, live music venues and cafés serving typical Danish dishes. Try marinated herring or open rye sandwiches.

Relax in the outdoor seating areas during the daytime in summer, when the bars offer affordable buffet menus. At night join locals and international students for Aalborg’s biggest parties in the clubs and discos. The Gaslight, which opened in 1967, was the first establishment to open on the street and today it is a popular nightclub. Other bars and clubs feature local bands, so easy-listening live music is an option too.

At the end of May the street forms part of the Aalborg carnival, with parades, stand-up comedy performances and concerts. Visit the Aalborg Karneval’s official website for all the details.

If you came to Jomfru Ane Gade during the day, also visit nearby streets such as Bispensgade and Gravensgade. Both are home to upscale fashion stores and independent outlets, so do some shopping while you are there.

Situated in the heart of the city, Jomfru Ane Gade is a short walk from Aalborg’s major attractions. Public buses stop on Vesterbro street, an easy stroll away. Gammeltorv square is only minutes away on foot.

Visit the special Jomfru Ane Gade website for information about the opening hours of the individual bars and clubs and event programs. Most clubs are free to enter and many restaurants have affordable prices.
