Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza showing outdoor art, a pond and modern architecture

In Albany’s beautiful plaza, find the New York State capital center, as well as fountains, parks, shops, museums and even a world-class art collection.

See culture and government converge at Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza. It is not only New York State’s capital center, but also a cultural center that draws thousands of visitors to Albany each year.

Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza, or simply Empire State Plaza, is the vision of its namesake, Nelson A. Rockefeller, who served as governor of New York from 1959 to 1973. He wanted to create "the most electrifying capital in the world." He commissioned Wallace K. Harrison, the chief architect for Rockefeller Center, to bring his vision to life. The plaza was completed in 1978. Today, explore the 10 buildings and fountains, parks and various venues on its 98 acres (40 hectares).

Check out the New York State Museum, located on the south end of the plaza. Learn about New York’s natural and cultural diversity through its many exhibits.

Explore Albany’s “underground city” in the Concourse of Empire State Plaza. Find food courts, a visitors’ center and lots of shops within the underground labyrinth. The Concourse connects all the buildings in Empire Plaza and is a popular lunch spot as well as a warm escape during cold Albany winters.

Admire Empire State Plaza’s world class collection of art. In the Concourse, see major pieces by artists including Alexander Calder, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Outside, admire many striking sculptures, such as George Sugarman’s bright yellow Trio or Alexander Calder’s angular piece in the pool.

See a show at The Egg. The uniquely shaped performance venue hosts film, music, comedy, dance and everything in between.

Go to the top of Corning Tower, the state’s tallest building outside New York City, and admire the observation deck’s panoramic views. Gaze across Albany, Empire State Plaza and the mountains beyond.

Begin or end your visit at the Empire State Plaza Visitor Center, located in the North Concourse. Learn more about the history of Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza and the governor himself. Take a self-guided tour using the plaza’s audio files or join a guided tour during summer months.
