Fuxing Park Tours

Fuxing Park featuring a garden as well as a small group of people

Join local residents reveling in the fresh air and green space in this lovely European-style park. For something unique, try a bubble romp over the pond.

Fuxing Park is one of the most popular parks in Shanghai because it offers a welcoming break from the city’s crowded streets. Bring the kids and check out the park’s playground and amusement park or relax on a bench and watch older residents practicing ballroom dancing.

Originally designed during the Ming dynasty as part of a private estate, this space later became a public park open exclusively for the city’s French residents. The French added classical European-style elements, which still define the space today. Note how the wide paths and well-manicured flower beds are reminiscent of a Parisian park.

Watch locals play chess and practice tai chi and ballroom dance. The park is home to over 140 different species of trees, including maples, wutongs, sycamores and buckeyes, which provide pleasant shade as you stroll.

In the northwest corner of the park, look for the bronze statue of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, the co-authors of The Communist Manifesto. Standing 21 feet (6.4 meters) high, the statue was erected in the 1980s to honor the 90th anniversary of Engels’ death.

Be sure to check out the park’s Mattress Flowerbed, which is landscaped differently depending on the season. Admire the pretty fountain at its center. You can also walk through the rose garden found toward the east end of the park and bring a picnic to enjoy on the lawn.

Try bubble romping at the pond. This involves rolling across the water in an inflatable bubble similar to an enormous hamster wheel. For something more laid-back, simply sit on a bench and watch fishermen waiting patiently for a catch.

Let the kids burn off energy in the park’s compact children’s playground area, which includes a carousel and bumper cars. If you visit on a weekend or holiday, pay a small fee to participate in additional family-friendly art projects and activities that take place.

Fuxing Park is open daily until sundown and admission is free. It is located in Shanghai's former French Concession area. Reach the park by taking the subway to South Shaanxi Road or Xintiandi stations.
