Fresh catches of the day, whale watching and island jaunts are some of the charms of this attractive fishing village just outside of Halifax.

Within a few miles of Nova Scotia's capital city is the small fishing village of Fisherman's Cove. The waterfront community is a wonderful place for a relaxing break, where you can enjoy scenic walks and fresh seafood, and explore a nearby island.

A good place to start, especially if you want to familiarize yourself with the area is the Main Centre. Learn about the local marine animals and explore the history of Eastern Passage and its surrounding islands through interactive artifacts and displays.

Then go for a stroll along the boardwalk that juts out into the Port of Halifax. Enjoy the sea views, which include fishing boats entering and leaving the port. Keep an eye out for seals which are often seen in the water here. Browse the boardwalk’s small collection of stores for clothes and handcrafted goods.

Head out to sea on a boat tour and go whale watching and deep sea fishing. Visit McNabs Island, the largest island in the Port of Halifax, to see the old fort that used to defend the area from attack.

During low tide, go over to McCormacks Beach, just south of Fisherman’s Cove. Its wheelchair accessible boardwalk is a popular place for a bike ride and scenic walk. There are also some excellent views from here. You can see Lawlor Island just offshore, the lighthouse at Devils Island and even Halifax’s skyscrapers in the distance. Stay for a while and picnic in one of the shelters.

Being a fishing village, Fisherman's Cove has local restaurants that take great pride in the fish dishes prepared with the daily catches. Dine out or buy your own supplies from the fish market.

Fisherman's Cove is just 9 miles (14.5 kilometers) from downtown Halifax, a trip that takes about 20 minutes by car. You can also take the ferry from Halifax to Dartmouth and then make the rest of the journey by bus.

The traditional village with its cottages and fishing community offers a relaxing day trip from Nova Scotia's busy capital.
