If you can walk the 8 miles to get up close, do it. We couldn't, so we saw the glacier from afar. Not a bad 1 mile hike though.
We hiked lower loop trail...you dont get very close to glacier...just enough for a picture. We hiked on Matanuska Glacier...would recommend that one and skipping Exit Glacier.
Took a cruise to tide water glacier. Saw puffins, se lions, humpback whale and orcas. Drove up the road for 8 miles from the lodge and saw Exit Glacier from close by. Park Office is at end of road and there are trails to Glacier.
