About this property

Entire place

You'll have the entire cabin to yourself and will only share it with other guests in your party.

The GETAWAY nestled in the Brazos Cliffs near the river.

Adventure off the beaten-path to discover the Upper Brazos Community, a vintage collection of cabins in the tall piney woods near Chama NM. The Getaway is a rustic A-Frame cabin built in 1964 as one of the original dwellings in the Upper Brazos. It was constructed with “mountain life” in mind utilizing durable finishes, a gas burning heater, a huge fireplace, and a sunroom that fills with glorious morning light and connects to a large covered porch that boasts the best views of the Brazos cliffs! The cabin has beautiful pine ceilings, an open kitchen with a farmhouse sink, walnut counters and industrial stools and a gathering table for meals by the fire. The primary suite downstairs offers a beautiful bedroom with view of the woods and an adjacent utility room and bathroom with a Saltillo tiled shower. Step up the winding staircase to explore the spacious Bunk-room with plenty of room to stretch out, play and rest.

Recently the interiors were renovated to retain its original warmth & charm while updating the interior surfaces, fixtures, furnishings, and installing high speed internet. Now you can enjoy the wooded scenery from a stately Writer’s desk in the sunroom, the view of the cliffs from the upstairs loft “cuddle couch”, or relax into one of the big leather chairs in the living room to read a book or stream a new movie.

The Getaway is a retreat, a refuge from the hustle & bustle, an invitation to slow down and reconnect with nature (while remaining as connected as necessary with free high-speed internet). Built at nearly 8,000 feet above sea level the cabin is nestled amongst tall evergreen trees with a deep set porch facing an acre of lush meadows cradled by surrounding mountains! The meadow provides abundant wildlife watching (deer, birds, fox, bunnies, prairie dogs, and occasionally bears) plus room to sprawl out in the sunshine or dance under the stars. Guests love the sunset views of the cliffs, listening to the afternoon rain on the porch’s metal roof, the sounds of the many birds, and the river flowing nearby.

Are you feeling adventurous? It’s only a short hike to the Brazos Cliffs private community RIVER ACCESS area where you can lounge on its sandy banks and fish trout from its abundant waters. Guests appreciate how chill and unpopulated it is! Bring your outdoor gear, park your ATV’s or RV’s in our big circle drive, and sprawl out. Also, relax knowing we have strong internet & phone capabilities and for any medical concerns we are within the Chama, NM emergency response area.

The Brazos Cliffs community is mostly inhabited by seasonal homeowners who grew up spending their Summers here with their grandparents who originally built in the sixties. It’s pretty quite in the Cliffs most of the year except for a few months in the Summer when you’ll occasionally hear ATV’s passing by, folks walking their dogs, laughter from an evening fish fry or the distant clanks of a game of horse shoes.

For leisure at The Getaway you can wind down with a game of washers, clean your catch of the day at our outdoor fish-cleaning station, and prepare your meals in our thoughtfully appointed kitchen. Eat fireside indoors or indulge in outdoor dining on the covered porch where you’ll witness a phenomenal cascading sunset on the cliffs.

The Getaway invites you to RELAX, RECHARGE, RECONNECT, and RE-WILD!

Additional information: The Getaway cabin is located down a dirt road off the rural HWY 512 which runs into HWY 84 and offers a short drive (15 minutes) to the grocery store, restaurants, and the iconic passenger train in Chama, NM. Otherwise we’re about an hour South of Pagosa Springs, CO, about 1hour and 45 minutes to Taos, NM and 2 hours to Santa Fe. The kitchen has a big sink, dishwasher, stove with oven, and refrigerator. It is thoughtfully stocked with cooking, cleaning, and serving accoutrements including handmade ceramic dishes, baking pots & pans, a blender, mixer, microwave, toaster, tea kettle, coffee pot, and a stocked Nespresso machine for all our strong coffee lovers. The bathrooms are stocked with plush towels and gently scented moisturizing products and a first-aid medicine cabinet. The beds and fold outs are comfortably outfitted with quality, breathable bedding.

The central area of the Bunk-room has a pair of twin beds and a futon, plus a small sturdy desk and plenty of carpeted area to stretch and play. There’s a half bath and a separate room on each end. The back room is set up as an office and is stocked with games, books, and drawing supplies. The front room has a comfy sofa and a window with a view of the whole one-acre property.

This is a CONTACTLESS PROPERTY with a keyless entry (the door has a digital keypad for the bolt lock).

If you have an extended stay (beyond a week) we will offer maid service to clean and restock your amenities.

Whether it’s a short or long visit, we hope you love your stay at The Getaway!

Side Note: Behind the cabin is a pottery workshop. It’s set back and out of view from the main Guest areas. Occasionally we need to throw pots while guests are enjoying the cabin. If so, we’ll never intrude or even be noticed.

On the upside, if you’re interested in pottery and want to take a look at our process or finished works we’d be glad to show you around. *If you want a pottery throwing lesson or just an opportunity to play in clay, let us know and we can arrange that for a fee. (Activity fees are based on $60/hour.)

We absolutely loved our stay. We arrived during a bout of bad weather, so we spent most of our time in front of the fire and watching the deer, turkeys and the season's first snowfall from the magnificent sunroom. The hosts have thought of just about everything you could possibly need to make this a home away from home. 10/10 recommend!

Cute comfortable cabin in beautiful setting
Booked the cabin for work purposes which ended early. Enjoyed the cabin so much that I decided to stay for a few extra days to enjoy it. The cabin is very well appointed with pretty much everything you will need and then some. The front porch is perfect for relaxing and the fireplace was great at night. Highly recommend this cabin for a stay in Brazos.

The Getaway is indeed a great Getaway!
My husband and I felt like we really got away from busy-ness to a peaceful, beautiful, serene neighborhood nestled far from the main highway in a tall pine tree area close to giant cliffs and the Brazos River. The cabin itself has a great 'personality' with small rooms for reading and painting, and larger rooms for sleeping. There is a huge, easy-to-use fireplace. The kitchen is large and well-appointed. We drank our morning coffee on the front porch and enjoyed seeing mule deer (somewhat tame), scampering chipmunks, and beautiful birds. Also, the cabin was very clean. We enjoyed our stay very much.

Cozy Cabin
Beautifully decorated, very clean cabin in the woods. We loved everything about it. But our favorite was the front porch. We enjoyed sitting outside in the cool air while watching the deer and taking in the gorgeous view.

The Getaway is a rare find - an opportunity to stay within walking distance to a good, long stretch of the Brazos River while being in a sophisticated and comfortable home. We came to fish, relax and enjoy the wildlife and it did not disappoint. The house is well-appointed and we did a fair amount of cooking - we love to cook - and all the tools we needed were handy. Since it was just the two of us, we used only the downstairs and it was so nice to have everything, including a lovely bedroom, on one level. The walk to the fishing area is not long - just across the street and down the hill. A good path system through the forest allowed us to try several fishing areas - where we did catch two fish! The surroundings are lovely - a view of the Cliffs that is just like a postcard. We saw lots of deer, which was great. An easy jump-off point to the lakes and Chama and more fishing available on the Chama River. Thanks for the lovely stay - we also loved the fireplace as the nights were wonderfully crisp.

Peaceful wilderness in Chama
The property was beautiful, extremely well kept, and very clean! There were all these amazing special touches such as fresh flowers in the vases, automatic candles for nighttime, and homemade dish ware! The river was very close, you could hear it relaxing out on the front porch! It was such a beautiful and relaxing environment and the best property that we’ve stayed in! I can’t rate it highly enough!

Wonderful Cabin
Me and my family booked this cabin to explore the Rio Brazos valley. The Getaway far surpassed our expectations. The hosts have thought about all the important details that make staying in the home very comfortable. The covered outdoor patio is a great space with incredible views of the cliffs. Fishing access is a 10 minute walk. I highly recommend this cabin if you are looking for a place to stay in the Rio Brazos valley.

Unforgettable A-Frame Retreat
Our stay at this recently renovated A-frame cabin near Chama was pure bliss. The cabin itself is a delightful blend of modern comfort and rustic charm. It's spacious, well-appointed, and surprisingly equipped with blazing-fast internet - a rare find in such a tranquil setting. The location is a nature lover's dream. The Rio Brazos is just a stone's throw away for fishing enthusiasts, while Herron Lake and the vibrant state of Colorado are within easy driving distance. We spent our days exploring the great outdoors - from exhilarating river rafting to peaceful fly fishing and invigorating hikes. Evenings were pure magic. We loved sipping morning coffee on the front porch as the world slowly awakened. But the true highlight was undoubtedly witnessing the breathtaking sunsets over the majestic mountains. It's a sight we'll cherish forever. We can't recommend this A-frame cabin enough. It's the perfect escape for those seeking relaxation, adventure, and stunning natural beauty. Gem of a Getaway
We arrived to an inviting Getaway. The cool breeze flowing through the cabin was delightful. Our family nestled in and enjoyed the outdoor spaces as well as the several indoor spaces. The deer, chipmunks and blue jays entertained us as we gazed above the meadow at the Brazos Cliffs. The Getaway has all the comforts of home. Abby is a gracious and thoughtful host. We plan on returning in the Fall.

Very beautiful location!
We had such a great time during our stay at The Getaway! The host was so nice! Amazing view of the cliffs from the front of the cabin. Everything we needed to cook and care for the family was there. We loved the Nespresso machine and the kids loved that there were board and card games and art supplies as well as all the room to play upstairs. We brought corn hole boards with us and we all enjoyed playing in the evenings in the beautiful sunsets. The porch chairs were so comfy to lounge in and watch for the deer that strolled through the meadow multiple times a day. One of the deer even came right up to the porch! The fireplace was lovely and all set up to use when we arrived. We loved hiking down to the river. During our stay in the area, we went on the train ride from Chama to Osier which was so beautiful and fun. We ate out at a couple of the restaurants in Chama which were yummy and reasonably priced. We visited and swam in the beautiful Heron lake which was only about a 20 minute drive from the cabin. We loved their book collection as well! Hope to return soon and definitely recommend!
