See the wondrous geologic formations in a vast underground cavern system. Cave facilities offer easy walks or adventurous climbs and crawls.

Explore Carlsbad Caverns National Park’s underground ecosystems. Rainwater passing through soil has formed acids. These solutions dripped through native limestone, picking up minerals and then creating fascinating deposits called speleothems.

Descend an elevator roughly 79 stories and follow the 1.3-mile (2-kilometer) Big Room Trail. Alternatively, walk down the steep, serpentine 1.3-mile (2-kilometer) Natural Entrance Trail to reach the Big Room.

Notice how calcium deposits have built stalactites and stalagmites, some eventually joining as columns. Nature has decorated the caves with mineral features of draperies, thin straws, popcorn-shaped nodules and oddly curved helictites.

Rent an audio guide to understand the history and geology of the caves. Reserve a spot on a ranger-led tour, which includes more rigorous climbing and crawling into narrow passageways. Your tour may pass through chambers with interesting names: King's Palace, Spider Cave and Hall of the White Giant. In Slaughter Canyon Cave, deposits take the shape of a sparkling Christmas tree.

Surprisingly, this vast underground attraction is equipped with facilities you might expect at an aboveground park: paved walkways, handrails, artificial lighting, restrooms, water fountains and a snack bar. Dress appropriately for the cave’s year-round cool, humid conditions.

When you return to the surface, enjoy the park’s aboveground features. The Chihuahuan Desert is great for backcountry trekking past cacti and canyons. Visit the park museum, with over 1 million artifacts from the area’s more than 10,000 years of human history.

Stay for the evening Bat Flight ranger talk. From May to October, watch thousands of bats leaving the cave every night for their nocturnal wanderings.

Carlsbad Caverns is open year-round except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Purchase a park entry pass good for 3 days or use an annual National Park Service interagency pass. Guided cave tours have an additional fee. Some trail segments are accessible to wheelchairs. The park’s New Mexico location is about a 1.5-hour drive from Roswell and just over 2 hours from El Paso, Texas.

U.S. national parks offer affordable access to tall peaks and deep caverns. Enjoy your visit to the fascinating underground world of Carlsbad Caverns National Park.

Pack your own snacks and/or lunch. The restaurant is a let down. It has huge tables and lots of natural light due to large windows (with a pretty view) and even skylights. But I ordered the pulled pork BBQ sandwich, looking forward to the jicama coleslaw that comes on the side only to be told that they no longer serve the coleslaw. They replaced it with chips/side salad. Why is it still on the menu then? Also they didn’t have the soft rolls that sandwich is normally served on. So I had sliced sandwich bread. And the lunch room in the cave is just a drab collection of undesirable sandwiches, bottled Gatorade, and bottled water. And there’s a sign next to the register which says that you have to eat and drink everything you buy (except water) in the lunch room before you continue the caverns hike. So I cancelled my purchase because I wasn’t going to sit and wait for my 2 kids to drink 20-oz bottles of Gatorade. Then the rude cashier said, “It’s the same rules that the ranger told you,” which is not true. Before the hike, the ranger said that no food or drink except water is permitted in the cave. He didn’t say anything about us having to finish all food and drink in the lunch room. If they only permit water to be drunk in the caves, why don’t they sell ONLY water in the caves? The ladies bathroom in the cave was very clean. As for the hike itself, I give it a 7 of 10 because I prefer hiking above ground. The gift shops above ground are very nice and so is the staff at both.

Went on a Monday and hardly anyone there. Much better than the last time which was crowded due to Spring Break. This is the only reason to visit Carlsbad. I

Carlsbad Caverns made our trip amazing! My kids loved it so much we went back down a second time after already hiking down in and taking the full loop in the big room. My oldest is 9 years old and said it's the coolest things she has ever seen in her life BY FAR-haha. Seriously-She up the night before and watch the Bat Flight-it's awesome and Ranger Dave was a treat. Then spend a full day hiking in and admiring the beauty. It truly is awe-inspiring.
