Marvel at this region of mesmerizing ravines, forest-covered cliffs and tropical wildlife from scenic lookout points or on a boat tour.

Tour Cañon del Sumidero National Park (Parque Nacional Cañon del Sumidero) and be enthralled by the wonders of nature. Cañon del Sumidero National Park is the result of geological cracks in the Earth’s core that commenced millions of years ago. It features a narrow gorge and a deep canyon with huge walls draped in fertile vegetation and inhabited by colorful wildlife.

A great way to experience this spectacular landmark is on a speedboat tour. Tours depart from Cachuare Pier and Chiapa de Corzo Pier, which are both located on the Grijalva River in Chiapas de Corzo. Cruise north along the river’s calm water to reach a vast reservoir created by Chicoasén Dam. Note how the canyon walls range in shape and height, with some reaching almost 3,300 feet (1,000 meters).

Sit back in your boat and admire the scenery. Spot bromeliad, ceiba, oak, ocote and pine trees. See caves decorated with stalactites and stalagmites. Listen as your guide points out interesting aspects of the canyon, such as caves and waterfalls. Among these are the Cave of Colors and the Christmas Tree Waterfall, named for the way moss hangs from a cliff.

On your tour observe a variety of birdlife, including cormorants, curassows, eagles, kingfishers and vultures. Crocodiles, deer, ocelots and spider monkeys also inhabit the park.

For an alternative and equally impressive view, travel by rented car, taxi or tour bus to the park’s lookouts. La Ceiba Lookout presents views of Chiapa de Corzo and an introduction to the canyon’s enormity. At La Coyota Lookout you can truly appreciate the height of the walls, while El Tepehuaje Lookout is great for bird-watching. From Manos que Imploran Viewpoint gaze out over the park’s northern section toward Chicoasén Dam.

Cañon del Sumidero National Park is a short drive east of Tuxtla Gutiérrez. A round-trip tour takes about 2 hours and boats depart as soon as they are full. Tours operate during daylight hours only. Temperatures are often high so bring a drink and wear a hat to protect you from the sun.
