Set in the historic Sailors' Quarter of St Valery, and recently refurbished with tasteful décor, this house is laid out on three floors, each with its own character, and shot through with charming touches of humour. Clean, elegant and well equipped, it is a brilliant base for exploring the Baie de la Somme, with its nature reserves, seaside towns and fishing heritage. We counted around a dozen restaurants within five minutes' walk of the house, and the enormous Sunday market takes place just outside! Saint Valery itself is popular, but retains a sense of serenity, with couples walking arm in arm along the broad wooden promenade in the evenings. Wonderful sunrises and sunsets. Lots for kids, if you have them. Nathalie and Stéphane were just a text or email away, and thoroughly engaged with making sure that our holiday was perfect in every way, giving all sorts of useful recommendations. Make sure you watch seals and cormorants in the Baie, go on the historic narrow-gauge railway to Le Crotoy, and if you're driving, watch birds at the Parc de Marquenterre, visit the Abbaye de Valloires, see the great cathedral at Amiens, the battlefields of Crécy and Azincourt, Neufchâtel for its cheese, the 11000 graves at Étaples, the Belle Epoque colours of Mers-les-Bains... the list goes on. One of our best ever holidays. Stayed for a fortnight, and barely scratched the surface of what there is to do!
